Health Access RI evolved over the last several years under the watchful eye of the Rhode Island Academy of FamilyPhysicians, the state charter of the American Academy of Family Physicians.  HealthAccess RI was designed and tested by leaders in the Rhode Island Family Medicine community.  HealthAccess RI works with practices across the state, showing them how to offer uninsured and under insured patients and those with health savings accounts and high deductible insurance an affordable reduced fee for service plan and a long-term personal physician. Rather than waiting until illness strikes, HealthAccess RI patients visit their doctors regularly for preventive care.  HealthAccess RI doctors monitor their patients more closely and can diagnose potential health problems before they became frightening emergency room visits. Of course, HealthAccess RI doctors also treat acute and chronic illness.

HealthAccess RI was offered for state-wide use in January, 2008.
